Rose Island Lighthouse is located on a small island just south of the Newport Bridge. It was built in 1869 atop an old fort bastion, but was abandoned in 1971, and vandalized. In 1993, it was restored by a non profit citizen group and now serves as an enviornmental education center that depends on wind power, rainwater and resourceful overnight visitors to keep the light station functioning.
